Strikers 2011 - Session #8

After last week's snow out (which was the first in the history of this league), today was absolutely the perfect Sunday:
  • We got to sleep in an extra hour.
  • Once we got to the field - the extra hour of sunshine really warmed up the field, making the playing conditions absolutely ideal!
Really, there is nothing else left to be said.  ;-)

The kindergartners and first graders started out with instruction from Coach Phil, playing the soccer mini games that essentially teach the the skills that they need to play soccer.  The mini games are especially important, because each player plays with their own ball - getting many more touches than they do during the game itself.  These extra touches enable each player to refine their skills, while having fun playing a game.  Imagine that, they are having fun and learning something at the same time?  After the mini games, due to the limited number of kindergartners, the kindergartners and 1st graders combined to play two inspiring games!

The second and third graders played from minute one, and received instruction from Coach Phil in the context of the game.  The second and third graders played the full length of the field today.

The fourth and fifth graders also immediately started their game, assisted by two parents who played goalie, enabling all the kids to play the field.  After "team black" took a 5-1 lead, "team yellow" rallied to a 5-5 tie, scoring a goal immediately before the end of the game to tie it.  After brief consultation with the parents, we decided to hold a "kick off" - each team would take a turn kicking at the goal - with only the goalie defending.  The team that scored the most goals would be considered the winner!  After the 1st round, each team scored one goal a piece.  The second round was also a nail biter..  Needless to say, the 4th and 5th graders were the last to leave the field today!

Photographs today were taken by Alyssa Lipman and Sarah Shamash and Danielle Binet.  Enjoy!
